In January 2008, the DSO and Honda announced an innovative partnership to take music education in Detroit to the next level. Honda has provided the DSO with a gift of over $1 million to create The Power of Dreams Music Education Fund that will help support and expand the DSO’s nationally acclaimed music programs for young people, and particularly an effort to encourage and support involvement of children in Detroit.

 Music and the arts are key to a well-rounded education. They ignite kids' creative energy and passion and help them find undiscovered talents. They expose kids to cultural events beyond their normal, everyday experiences. They promote a more global view. However, with dwindling budgets in public schools, arts are often the first programs to be slashed from curriculums. The Detroit Symphony Orchestra's music education programs offset the expanding lack of resources by offering world-class training and performance opportunities for students of all ability levels, from elementary school to college graduate students.

The Surdna Foundation
The Surdna Foundation is pleased to support The Power of Dreams Fund at the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. Surdna shares in the DSO's goal of providing high quality music education to children from this community through the Civic Academy and in partnership with the Detroit School of Arts. Surdna has provided a $100,000 grant to support the DSO this year.
