Mark Abbott joined the Detroit Symphony Orchestra in 1982, immediately following his high school graduation. At age 18, he was one of the youngest appointees in the Orchestra’s history.
Prior to joining the DSO, Abbott attended Interlochen Arts Academy in 1981 and performed with the prestigious Spoleto Festival Orchestra and the Colorado Philharmonic as principal horn. As the winner of a national competition, he was a guest soloist with the New York Philharmonic for a performance of Strauss’ First Horn Concerto at a Young People’s Concert. Maestro Zubin Mehta was so impressed with young Abbott that the conductor invited him to perform the same work with the Philharmonic on a regular subscription series concert under Mehta’s baton.
As winner of another national competition, Abbott performed the Weber Concertino and the Schumann Konzertstuck with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra in 1982, and was also invited to perform Mozart’s Fourth Concerto with the Columbus Symphony Orchestra in 1985. He has also been a featured soloist with the DSO.
Outside the DSO, Abbott is an active chamber musician who performs as a member of the Detroit Chamber Winds & Strings.
