Bassist Linton Bodwin was born in Lansing, MI, in 1952. He joined the DSO in 1974, after serving as Principal Bass for the Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra. Having come from a musical family – his mother was a choral instructor and pianist, his brother a violist and his sister a cellist – Bodwin spent several summers as a teenager studying music at the Interlochen Center for the Arts in northern Michigan.
He continued on in the University Division and was also in the faculty staff orchestra. He spent one summer at Wolf Trap Farm Park outside of Washington, D.C. He majored in double bass at Michigan State University, graduating in 1973 with a degree in music. His principal teachers included Virginia Bodman, Robert Gladstone and Lawrence Hurst. During his tenure with the DSO, Bodwin has served under four distinguished music directors, including Aldo Ceccato, Antal Dorati, Günther Herbig and Neeme Järvi.
Bodwin and his wife Marcie are celebrating their 29th wedding anniversary in August and are the proud parents of two sons, William and Ethan.
