Carole Gatwood joined the Detroit Symphony Orchestra in 1981. She received bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Indiana University School of Music. Before coming to the DSO she was a member of the Birmingham (Alabama) Symphony and the Denver Symphony.
Gatwood is a member of the cello ensemble Celli Jam, which premiered her two published cello quartet arrangements, Claude Debussy’s Golliwog’s Cakewalk and Edvard Grieg’s Ingrids Lament, one of which received a highly favorable review in the January 2000 issue of The Instrumentalist.
Gatwood is married to fellow DSO musician, bassist Craig Rifel. Together they have three sons: Eric, Peter, and Nicholas. Between the three of them, the boys are studying piano, violin, percussion and trumpet. Gatwood enjoys her position as DSO Liaison for the Retired Musicians.
