Vanguard Voices

Concert Description

For 34 years, the Classical Roots Concert has celebrated African-American contributions to classical music. In 2000, the black-tie Celebration was founded to honor select African-American composers, musicians and educators for lifetime achievement, and raise funds to support the DSO’s African-American music and musician development programs.

This year, Classical Roots will honor the late James dePriest, great American conductor and longtime friend of the DSO. Maestro Leonard Slatkin will be joined by renowned bass-baritone Eric Owens, the Brazeal Dennard Chorale and Vanguard Voices for an unforgettable performance.
